How to become a Google search wizard

Re-blogged from : Think Digit

How to use Google search better, including using the carousel, image search, handwriting, history and even finding a postal address.
How to become a Google search wizard
Google Search has come a long way since its introduction over a decade ago. The search engine has kept pace with changes in time and user behaviour to offer exactly what you’re looking for. There are different tricks of the trade as far as Google Search is concerned and mastering them will help you get the most out of Google’s search engine.

Search carousel
Probably the biggest evolution of Google Search was the integration of semantic search features in the product, known as Knowledge Graph. Users of Google Search will instantly remember it by the rectangular box that appears on the right-hand side of the search results page. A very good way to access Google Search in a whole new way is to look for suggested links towards the bottom of that Knowledge Graph box.
For instance, if you search for Leonardo DiCaprio, and look at the Knowledge Graph box on the right of the result page, it includes a treasure trove of links and images to what Google thinks you might be looking for (based on semantic search connections). Click under “Movies and TV shows” or “People also search for” to switch to carousel mode at the top of the page. Flip through these bonus search results (that you never intended to do) and you’ll get new avenues of information presented in a convenient way.
Search carousel is a brilliant way to arrive at unforeseen results
Image search
Google’s given possibly the most comprehensive overhaul to its image search feature since the service launched in 2001. Apart from the massive UI overhaul, the biggest feature was added recently. You can now bypass the need for entering a keyword and search for images by uploading an image or entering a hyperlink. It makes perfect sense for Google Images to have this feature and it makes you wonder why it took so long for engineers at Google to figure it out.
Image search has grown into a beast, with new ways to search
However, one of the most indispensable features of images search which isn’t readily visible on the results page is the ability to look for an image similar or different in size to the one you found on the search page. Look for this feature when you click on any image on the image search result page; the image expands and is displayed on a grey canvas block. In that box, click on the “Image details” button to be redirected to a related Google Search page that shows you the search keywords related to the image, its current size and lets you select whether you want to search for a larger copy of the image. This page also lets you view images “visually” similar to the original image. Pretty cool, huh?

Handwrite
If you’re accessing Google Search through a touch-enabled mobile device, along with typing and voicing your search queries aloud, you now have the ability to scribble them on to your smartphone’s screen in your handwriting (if that’s the quickest way for you to search). Yes, you read that right. Depending on how good your screen-scribbled handwriting is, Google understands the keyword from anywhere between a split second to a couple of seconds, which is quite snappy.
To toggle the feature on, just open Google’s homepage on your device’s native browser. Access Google Search Preferences and click on the “enable” radio button under the Handwrite option. That’s it.
Handwritten searches FTW
You’ll now see a small “G” icon at the bottom right of Google’s home page to let you know that handwriting is enabled. Write clearly and let autocomplete help you finish your keywords quicker. It works best on the native Android browser on Android 2.3 and upwards, Android 4.0+ tablets and iOS 5+ devices.
Search your history
Google Search also lets you access the history of your search activity on the search engine. Think of it as Google’s very own History tab, similar to the one found in most web browsers these days. And you also have the ability to purge your search activity selectively or completely restrict and protect your online privacy. It’s a great way to mine your own data and recollect and revisit what you were trying to search in the past.
As a rule, Google only records your search activity if and when you’re logged into a Google account through a web browser. To see your Google Search history, visit google.com/history to see the complete list of keywords that you searched through Google starting from today and going backwards in time.
Analyze your Google account’s search history
Google also readily showcases an hourly, daily and monthly search activity related graph for your account – it’s a great way to analyze your Google Search habits. However, if you’re worried about the implications of Google’s search history and don’t want your keywords recorded, you can easily turn the feature off or delete all past search history through the Settings tab visible under the now familiar Gears tab on the top right of the page.
Find related pages
How cool would it be for you to encounter websites similar to a topic that you’re interested in? We know there are blogging services and tools available to do this, but their scope doesn’t really encapsulate the true expanse of the World Wide Web. Google Search makes discovering websites of a particular topic a lot easier than you’d think. It makes use of a Google operator called “related”.
Just copy the URL of a website you liked, visit Google’s home page. Type in “related:” and the URL without any space in between and hit [Enter]. The resulting search page will list out websites that Google thinks are related to the topic you’re interested in. Give it a try.
Search for an address
Google lets you enter pincode numbers to find their exact location. This is because Google understands pincodes as more than a set of numbers and their unique function. For instance, if you type in just “560027” in Google’s search page, it will return search results that will have at least one link referring to the exact location of the area.
Furthermore, if you append a pincode with the word “map”,
Searching for an address was never this easy
Google will try and give you the exact location of the place on Google Maps. So say we typed in “560027 map”, the search results will be even more precise for Indian addresses, while for American zip code searches, Google will return a small map view at the top of the page with the exact area covered under the zip code.

Social Media for Movies

Recently I see many movies being promoted in Social Media before and after release that's the reason why I write this post. In this post I will try to explain how Social Media can be used for promoting movies.

FACEBOOK
Facebook is the right place for promoting about the movie before release. When the audio is launched or when the first trailer comes, create a page in Facebook and start promoting the movie with latest visuals, photo-shoot, interview, songs, videos etc.
Facebook is the place with large number of audience, thus try to share more updates and try to keep the audience engaged. This will help in creating a high during the release of the movie.

TWITTER
Twitter is the tool that should be used at day or two before the release of the movie or use after a day or two of release. In Twitter you can conduct some contests for promoting the movie. Example making a tie-up with PVR or Book my show and proving free tickets for the winners of the contest. By announcing this goodies we are trying to engage as much as users as possible.
The difference in Facebook and Twitter is , Twitter doesn't work without goodies. Even in Facebook we can conduct contests to make more customer engagement.

PINTEREST
Pinterest is the area which not tapped by many movie promoters but it can be a great tool if it used in a proper way. The users of Pinterest are increasing day by day, and the greatest advantage of using Pinterest is it provides visual engagement to the customers. You can share pictures about the movie , videos about the movie using Pinterest and its a great tool for promoting movie. It is same like putting posters or banners about the movie, but the difference is here we are doing online.

YOU-TUBE
You-tube is the tool which is used by all movie promoters, they share videos, songs, trailers about movie etc in You-tube. It also provides more customer engagement when it is linked with other social medias.

BLOGGER
Blog is something which is not used much by movie promoters, but it is great tool if used. Using blogger customers can share their view points/reviews about movie. There are many movie blogger, music bloggers, etc. if we could engage them then it is a great tool.

NOTE
None of these tools are great tool if used alone, these tools can be made used effectively only if they are inter-connected with all Social Medias.

Thank you. Have a great day.

Over past few months, you may have heard some chatter about the brand new Social Network called Pinterest. It is one of the fastest growing Social Network.

So what is Pinterest ??

Pinterest is a social network site which allows users to share visual contents. It allows users to make boards and pin images or videos into it. The users can follow other boards, repin etc.
  • A Pin: A pin is the image added to the users board in Pinterest.
  • Board: The pinned images are collected in the board. It is like creating an album and uploading photos into it in Facebook. The user can make any number of boards.
  • Pinning: The act of adding photos, i.e sharing photos.
  • Repin: It is the act of re-posting someone else post. Similar to share in Facebook or ReTweet in Twitter.
  • Pin it Button: It is the pin it button placed in users website which allows them to directly pin it to Pinterest.
  • Pinner: Is the person who pins.

Uses of Pinterest for Business:

  • Using Pinterest the business can provide visual appeal to customers. Example: Fashion Store providing pictures about the apparels or other beauty accessories, Restaurant proving pictures about the food, E-commerce store proving pictures about the products etc.. There is no limit for the creativity. Thus it conveys message easily to customers.
  • The Business can share their charts or info-graphics about their performance.
  • The Business can share the happy customers photos, it helps in engaging the customers.

TWITTER - for business

According to my personal opinion Twitter is the best tool for customer engagement when compared to other tools like Facebook, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Pinterest etc. I would try explain some of the advantages of Twitter and some things to be taken care when using Twitter.

Some of the advantages of using Twitter are:

  • Twitter just supports 140 characters , thus when we communicate something because it is short customers will spend time in reading it. But the point to be noticed how effectively we are using our language when we communicate a message with just 140 characters.
  • Using Twitter you can do anything and everything which you do in other social media tools, Example: you can post videos like YouTube, share status like Facebook, share photos like Pinterest, share link etc. Well this can be done in Facebook too but Twitter has more customer engagement.
  • Its easy to reply to a tweet, share a tweet (retweet), like the tweet (favorite), and send message (Direct Message).
  • People use Facebook more for their personal purposes, but Twitter is a mix of both personal and professional.
  • Statistics show that Twitter has more customer turnover rate than Facebook or any other social medias.

Things to be taken care when using Twitter:

  • Choose short and cache Twitter Handle. Try to avoid characters because Mobile users will find it difficult to type and Tweet.
  • Choose appropriate Display Picture and Header Photo. It is same like Facebook profile picture and cover picture.
  • Follow your right target audience and that will help Business in having better interaction with the customers.
  • How do you make people follow you? Conduct events, contests etc in Twitter and give away goodies to customers. When you conduct contests make a #tag for your brand and ask your customers to tweet with that particular #tag and when more and more people start tweet with that #tag, it will become a trend and appear in trend map, thus even the people who are not your followers can see the trend and follow you. In this way you gain more customers as well as you engage your customers.
  • Link your Twitter account to your website, blogs and other pages.
  • When you tweet directly to customers , never tweet all customers at same time because people will think you are trying to spam, maximum send 3-5 tweets at a stretch and then take a break and send again.
I hope this would have helped you. For more posts stay tuned...!!
